History

Jurnal Pendidikan Karakter (JPKA) was founded in 2011 to give character education in Indonesia a scholarly forum of its own. Over more than a decade it has grown from a printed institutional journal into an accredited, fully online, open-access publication read and cited well beyond Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta.

⌂ Origins

The journal first appeared in October 2011, at a moment when character education had been placed at the centre of national education policy in Indonesia. Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, as a university of education, needed a channel through which the research, programmes, and classroom experience gathering around that policy could be documented, examined, and shared. Jurnal Pendidikan Karakter was established for that purpose, and was managed in its early years by the Institute for Educational Development and Quality Assurance (LPMPP) of the university.

From the outset the journal has been published twice a year. It carries both a print ISSN (2089-5003) and an online ISSN (2527-7014), the latter registered as the journal moved towards full online publication.

◉ Development of the Scope

The journal's early volumes reflected the concerns of the national character education programme of the time: curriculum design, school culture, and the integration of character into subject teaching. As the field matured, the scope widened to take in moral development across the lifespan, the role of family and community, virtue and religiosity, local wisdom, legal and civic awareness, and more recently character formation in digital settings. The journal now also publishes work on the measurement and evaluation of character education, an area long under-represented in the literature. The current statement of coverage is given on the Focus and Scope page.

★ Editorial Leadership

The journal has been guided by successive editorial teams drawn from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta and partner institutions in Indonesia and abroad. The present Editor-in-Chief is Yayuk Hidayah of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, working with managing and associate editors, an international and Indonesian editorial board, and a network of reviewers. The full composition is given on the Editorial Team page.

▣ Continuity of the Record

Every issue the journal has published remains available in full text through the Archives, including the issues released before the journal moved to its present platform. Articles are not removed after publication; where a correction is needed, the journal issues a correction or retraction notice that remains linked to the original article, as set out in the Correction and Retraction policy.

▸ Today. Jurnal Pendidikan Karakter continues to publish in April and October, under the Institute of Research and Community Service, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, and welcomes submissions from researchers, lecturers, teachers, and practitioners working on character education in Indonesia and beyond.
