CHARACTER BUILDING THROUGH SCIENCE TEACHING AND LEARNING
Abstract: The teaching and learning of science can be used as a means of developing the cognitive, affective, and psychomotoric abilities. Science should be learned in ways which enable students to apply their abilities with character in solving problems of every day life. There are still many cases indicating the low character of the Indonesian people. Ethics is a value system having the same meaning as morality. The development of character education should follow the steps of introducing values cognitively, understanding and internalizing the values affectively, the formation of determination conatively, and finally the implementation of the values in real life. Teachers of science should provide the students with ample opportunities to think and use their reasoning ability. Students can do it by being directly involved in various activities such as classroom discussions, problem solving, or experimenting. They should not only be made passive objects with the load of memorizing various concepts and science formulas.
