Empowering Women Heads of Households (PEKKA) through a Circular Economy: Innovation in Eco-Friendly Prayer Beads (Tasbih)
Abstract
The emergency context of waste in the Special Region of Yogyakarta due to the closure of the Piyungan landfill has prompted research that integrates a circular economy model based on non-formal education and women's empowerment. This study aims to ground the concept of circular economy and environmental awareness among the community implemented for vulnerable groups of Women Heads of Households (PEKKA) through the innovation of rosary beads made from plastic bottle cap waste. The method was implemented using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) through five participatory stages: field assessment, program development, program implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and program accountability and reporting. Conducted over three months, data was collected through interviews, observations, documentation, and focus group discussions with all partners as informants. Subsequently, data analysis was conducted inductively following the Miles & Huberman model, which includes the stages of condensation, presentation, and drawing conclusions from the data. The program demonstrated an increase in the capacity of approximately 15 PEKKA members, with the production of 10 kg of plastic waste in the form of prayer beads, the sale of 35 products generating IDR900,000, strengthened social networks, and changes in waste management behavior.
