Adult Learning through Community Participation and Identity Transformation among Rural Women
Abstract
This study examined how rural women learned in the Local Hero community at PKBM An-Nur and how they interpreted changes arising from participation. A qualitative case study involved five purposively selected participants. Data were generated through interviews, activity observations, and documents, then examined using reflexive thematic analysis informed by situated learning and communities of practice. The findings identified four interconnected processes: entering the community, learning through participation, reconstructing identity, and becoming community mobilizers. Gradual involvement in production, marketing, discussion, and mentoring provided opportunities for participants to develop skills, confidence, social networks, and mentoring roles. The community therefore operated as a social learning space that supported participatory adult learning and participants’ reported changes in skills, confidence, and identity.
Keywords: adult learning, community-based learning, situated learning, community of practice, women's empowerment.
