Abstract

Zaman tanam paksa adalah era paling eksploitatif dalam praktek ekonomi Hindia Belanda. Sistem tanam paksa ini jauh lebih keras dan kejam dibanding sistem monopoli VOC karena ada sasaran pemasukan penerimaan negara yang sangat dibutuhkan pemerintah. Aset tanam paksa inilah yang memberikan sumbangan besar bagi modal pada zaman keemasan kolonialis liberal Hindia-Belanda pada tahun 1835- 1940.

 

Di atas kertas, teori Cultuurstelsel memang tidak terlalu membebani rakyat, namun dalam pelaksanaannya, terbukti sangat merugikan petani terutama di Jawa, yang mengakibatkan kesengsaraan, kemiskinan, dan kematian bagi rakyat di tanah koloni.
